Some Game Play Basics
Though there is a great basic how-to in the FAQs on almost every server, this site was created so that you don't have to be logged into a game to gather information. This will also have a bit of information (no spoilers) on some of the unique features on GizBug's Follies.
The game can be played on many different levels - you pick a race and a specialty and fight forest fights (or other players or both) until you get big enough to kill the Green Dragon. Along the way you can chat, buy armor, weapons, jewelry, hats, or other goodies, complete quests, and die. Holidays can be a blast, with special events or strange talk.
Some things in the game are limited to those with more dragon kills. GizBug's Follies has several shops and races that are only available when you get big enough! Don't be afraid to click on the links you see - if something doesn't happen the first time, come back later on!
PvP is a part of the game. Most players don't do it to be vindictive - they do it to gain levels and kill the dragon faster. If you get killed, don't worry. You don't lose everything, just a little experience. Dust yourself off, get bigger, and visit your killer. Some players haunt their enemies from the graveyard. If you don't want to engage in PvP, you can turn it off in your Preferences.
Many players cry for help with spoilers, and just as many more experienced players will not reveal such information in public. I am not going to reveal any game secrets, but I will make a strong suggestion for your enjoyment of the game...Explore! About the worst thing that can happen to you is you will die and lose whatever gold you were carrying. Most things in the game won't do that, so... relax and enjoy.. explore... click on links that look interesting. Every player has things they do every day. My playing day usually includes visits to Heidi, Saucy's Kitchen, and Audrey when I can find her. Some swear by the swill served in the taverns. I also avoid many of the forest events. The point I am trying to make is that each player plays the game in their own way. If I just said tattoos do nothing but look pretty, well, first it's a lie, and second, I want to see what fun *you* have with them. (The semi-spoiler answer is that they will help with something in the forest.) There are MANY things like this in the game - it is up to you if you are going to indulge or not.
General recommendation - stay in the Sandbox as long as you can. While you are there, you are safe from PvP and have a chance to learn the game. You will have plenty of time to explore the rest of the realm when you are ready. Each village has different things to do with your hard earned gold and gems - things that can alter your stats, daily turns, or just make you laugh.
One other thing that I hear new players ask about is how to get the fancy colors in the names or name your mount, etc. These are perks given to those who support the game. On every page, you will see 2 PayPal links given. The author link makes it easy for you to donate to MightyE, the creator of the current game. While this is a very cool thing to do, it doesn't get you lodge points. To do that, you will want to click on the link that says "Site Admin" and make a donation there. You can also refer other players for points on many servers. One other thing I have started doing is rewarding people who help us debug this installation. We tested the static modules, but it is hard to test the specials. Either Petition for Help or YoM Pagan if you have a problem with the way a module works. I will reward you for your efforts!
Some hints that will usually help you out in a bind:
- Bank often. Sometimes you get rewarded for coming into town from the forest.
- Try using Slum for money, Thrillseek for points, Search for balance between the two.
- Keep your armor and weapons close to your levels, especially when you have few dragon kills
- EXPLORE! As to what you can do with gems or gold, most servers have places for you to spend them. EXPLORE the various shops you find.
- If you lose your gold, or get killed with pvp, don't worry. It is only a game, and you can come back on the next game day and recuperate.
- Many shops will give you buffs or enhancements. Learn which ones work for you by trying them out. They may be in different places on different servers, too.
- Many players ask when to leave the Isle of Wen (or whatever the area for newcomers is called - ours is The Sandbox). Many also ask when they will get to kill the Green Dragon or the Penguin. You will know when it is time by the messages you see on your screen. Believe me, you can't miss them.
- Spend some time reading the daily news and the chat in the various public areas. Lots of clues there!
- Relax, have fun, and find that Green Dragon often!
